The Best Time of Day for Outdoor Family Sessions in Central Pennsylvania
If you’ve ever booked a session with a professional photographer, you’ve likely heard the term "Golden Hour." But why is it so important, and how does it work when you’re dealing with the specific landscapes of Central Pennsylvania?
Whether we are shooting in the rolling hills of Southern York County or under the canopy of a local state park, light is the most important "prop" we have.
The Magic of Golden Hour
Golden Hour occurs during the first hour after sunrise and the last hour before sunset. During this time, the sun is low in the sky, creating soft, warm light that is incredibly flattering for skin tones.
In Central PA, our terrain adds another layer to this. Because we have many valleys and thick tree lines, "Golden Hour" might actually start 30 minutes earlier if we are in a wooded area like Rocky Ridge, or last a bit longer if we are on a high point overlooking the Susquehanna.
Why We Avoid High Noon
The "worst" time for photos is typically between 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM. When the sun is directly overhead, it creates harsh shadows—specifically the "raccoon eyes" shadow under your brow bone—and causes everyone to squint.
If your schedule only allows for a midday session, we look for "open shade"—areas under a large tree or on the shaded side of a building—to keep the light even.
The "Bedtime" Dilemma
For parents of young children, a 7:30 PM sunset session in June sounds like a recipe for a meltdown. Here is how we handle it:
- The Nap Strategy: Give your kids a slightly later or longer nap on the day of the session.
- The High-Value Snack: Pack mess-free snacks (like fruit snacks or clear crackers) to keep energy up.
- The Morning Alternative: Sunrise sessions are just as beautiful and often work better for early risers. A 7:00 AM session at a York park means the kids are fresh, the air is cool, and the light is perfect.
What About Cloudy Days?
Don't panic if the forecast says "mostly cloudy." Clouds act as a giant softbox, diffusing the light and making it incredibly easy to shoot in any direction. Some of my favorite editorial-style portraits were taken on overcast days in Downtown York.
Frequently Asked Questions
When exactly is Golden Hour in York?
It changes every day! In the peak of summer, it might be 7:30 PM – 8:30 PM. In the dead of winter, it could be 3:30 PM – 4:30 PM. I will always coordinate the exact start time with you based on our specific location.
Can we do photos in the rain?
Light rain or "mist" can be beautiful and cinematic, but if it’s a downpour, we will reschedule. I keep a close eye on local York weather radars in the hours leading up to our session.
How long does the light last?
Once the sun dips below the horizon (or the tree line), we have about 15-20 minutes of "Blue Hour," which is soft, cool, and very modern.
