What to Expect from a Family Portrait Session in York, PA

Most families come to a portrait session with two things: excitement and low-grade anxiety. This guide is designed to eliminate the second one.

Choosing a Location in York County

Rocky Ridge County Park

York's most-booked portrait location. Wooded trails, open meadows, and a pond provide variety within a single session. Fall sessions book 7–8 weeks in advance.

Nixon Park

More intimate feel with forest paths and a creek. Good for families who want a quieter, less-trafficked setting.

Samuel S. Lewis State Park

Elevated location with panoramic views of York County. Best in late afternoon light.

Downtown York

Brick walls, murals, and architectural backdrops for families who want an urban, editorial feel.

When to Schedule

Golden hour — the hour before sunset — provides the warmest, most flattering light. For afternoon sessions, this means scheduling with a 5–6 PM start in fall, 6–7 PM in summer.

  • Fall (October): Books 7–8 weeks in advance
  • Spring sessions: Book by February
  • Fall sessions: Book by early August

What to Wear

Coordinating is more important than matching. Choose a color palette of 2–3 complementary tones — navy and cream, burgundy and tan, sage and white — and let each family member work within that palette in their own way.

Avoid busy patterns, logos, and neon colors.

What Actually Happens During the Session

The first 10 minutes are adjustment time — kids need to warm up, adults need to relax. We direct throughout the session. You don't need to know how to pose; that's our job.

Session length is typically 60–90 minutes. Your full gallery is delivered within 7–10 business days.
