Maternity Photo Session Prep Checklist: Everything You Need to Know
Pregnancy is a whirlwind. Between nursery planning and doctor appointments, preparing for a photo session might feel like just another task on your to-do list.
At Charlie-Roe Photography, I want your maternity session to be a quiet, intentional pause—a way to preserve this season before life changes forever. Here is a practical checklist to help you prepare for your session in York, PA.
1. Timing is Everything
The "sweet spot" for maternity photos is typically between 30 and 34 weeks.
- Your bump is beautifully defined.
- You (usually) still have enough energy to move around comfortably.
- If you're expecting multiples, aim for 26-30 weeks.
2. Wardrobe: Comfort Over Everything
You don't need a massive, flowing "maternity gown" unless that’s truly your style.
- Fabrics: Choose fabrics that hug your curves and show off the bump. Jersey knits, silk, and linen work beautifully.
- Undergarments: Wear nude, seamless undergarments. If you're wearing a light-colored dress, this is crucial.
- Shoes: Bring a pair of comfortable walking shoes (like flip-flops or sneakers) to get between spots at our York location, and swap into your "photo shoes" once we start.
3. Hydration and Rest
The 24 hours leading up to your session matter.
- Water: Drink plenty of water to help your skin look hydrated and reduce swelling.
- Moisturize: Apply lotion to your bump and limbs to avoid dry skin, but do it at least two hours before the session so it has time to soak in (and doesn't leave you looking "greasy" in photos).
4. The "Details" Check
- Nails: Your hands will be on your bump for many of the shots. A neutral or clear polish is perfect.
- Jewelry: Keep it minimal. A simple necklace or your wedding rings are all you need.
- Clothing Lines: Avoid tight bras or leggings for 2-3 hours before the session to prevent elastic marks on your skin.
5. Partner and Siblings
Maternity sessions are about the whole family transitioning.
- Coordination: Align their outfits with yours (see our What to Wear Guide).
- Role: Encourage your partner to be present and supportive—not just a "prop" in the background.
6. The "Go-Bag" for Your Session
Pack a small bag with:
- Water and a quick snack.
- A hairbrush and lip balm.
- Comfortable walking shoes.
- An extra outfit (if we’ve planned a change).
