In-Home Newborn Sessions: A Guide for New Parents
The first few weeks with a newborn are a blur of wonder, exhaustion, and coffee. The last thing most parents want to do is pack up a diaper bag, a crying baby, and three outfits to drive to a photography studio.
That is why I specialize in in-home lifestyle newborn photography. I come to you in York, PA, or anywhere in Central Pennsylvania, to document your family in the place where you feel most comfortable.
What is "Lifestyle" Photography?
Unlike studio photography—which involves posing babies in buckets or baskets—lifestyle photography is about connection. I focus on the way you hold your baby, the light in the nursery, and the quiet moments on your living room sofa.
There are no heavy props or rigid poses. Just your family, being together.
How to Prepare Your Home
Here is the most important thing: Your house does not need to be a Pinterest board.
- The "Light" Check: I primarily look for one or two rooms with good natural light (usually the master bedroom and the nursery).
- The "Clutter" Rule: Don't feel like you need to deep-clean. Simply clearing off a nightstand or moving a stray laundry basket is all it takes. I will help move anything that might be distracting in the frame.
- Warmth: Babies love warmth. I recommend turning the heat up a few degrees about 30 minutes before I arrive.
What to Wear
Keep it simple, soft, and neutral.
- Textures over Prints: Choose knits, linens, and soft cottons.
- Neutral Palettes: Creams, soft greys, and muted blues or greens look beautiful against a baby’s skin.
- Bare Feet: In-home sessions feel more natural without shoes.
The Flow of the Session
I never "rush" a newborn session. If the baby needs to eat, we pause. If there is a diaper blowout, we pause.
- Duration: Typically 90 minutes to 2 hours. This gives us plenty of time for feedings and soothing.
- Interaction: I will give you gentle direction on where to sit or how to hold the baby to catch the best light, but then I let the real moments happen.
Frequently Asked Questions
What if my baby is awake the whole time?
That’s great! Awake babies have wonderful expressions. Unlike "posed" sessions that require the baby to be in a deep sleep, lifestyle sessions work perfectly whether the baby is awake or asleep.
Can our pets be in the photos?
Absolutely. Pets are part of the family transition. As long as they are comfortable with a visitor, I love including them.
When should we schedule?
I recommend scheduling your session for when the baby is between 5 and 14 days old, but lifestyle sessions are very flexible and can be done up to 6 weeks old.
